Is Breakfast Really the Most Important Meal of the Day?

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day". The phrase we've all heard for generations, and never question. After all, it makes perfect sense without even putting much thought into it- it "breaks the fast". But is that really true & why? The obvious justification is that food is fuel, and we all need to get charged up for the day, right? And with that, of course eating the right foods make a huge difference. Now, the question is what are "the right foods"? So, lets dig into this a bit further.
Here's something you may not have known. "Breakfast is the most important meal" was made famous in 1917 by Kellogg's. Easy to suggest that as one of the most successful ad campaigns ever, right?!
Knowing the importance of our first meal, the question remains as to our morning choices. With all due respect to Kellogg's, there's more to a healthy breakfast than a bowl of cereal. Actually, there's been so much talk on this, that there's even an International Breakfast Research Initiative which was created to provide a more educated approach to establishing nutritional quality standards for breakfast-showing recommended daily intakes of nutrients, specifically for breakfast.
General findings & facts show the negative effects of skipping breakfast (like this one from Stanford that highlights the increased risk of diabetes, or this one from the CDC that shows skipping breakfast can negatively impact students mood & grades), it's pretty clear that what we thought or maybe even knew from being in tune with our own bodies is true. Breakfast is key to starting the day well. Kellogg's wasn't wrong.
As far as what to have for breakfast, it's best to go with your lifestyle. Most Americans have a heavy intake of carbs at breakfast. Doesn't get much easier than pouring a bowl of cereal, popping some toast in the toaster, or grabbing a quick premade or drive-thru breakfast or smoothie.
